主人公は main character でも良いですが、専門用語を用いるなら「Protagonist」があります。
従って、「The protagonist is a cat」と言います。
他にも、主人公が突発的ではなく、複数の重要なキャラがいる場合は、「Chief protagonist」と言います。従って、この場合ですと「The chief protagonist is a cat, but there are other prominent characters like a dog, a snake」などの英語になります。
