If you squish the food in your hands it makes a big mess! (It's hard work to clean up!)

一歳の子の食事はこういう感じが多いですよね！
「グチャグチャにする」は "squash" になりますが、小さい子供に対しては "squish" を使う方が多いです。
この文脈の 「大変」なことになる＝＞ make a big mess! （メチャクチャにする・なる）
後片付けが大変です ＝＞ It's hard work to clean up!

「一歳のうちの子は今、手掴み食べをしています。食べ物を手でグチャグチャにするから困っています。後片付けが大変です。」
"My 1 year old currently grabs food and eats with his hands. I'm troubled because he mashes up food with them. I have a hard time clearing up." など
Mash up はマッシュのようにグチャグチャにする感じの表現です。
後者の make a mess は直訳するとめちゃくちゃの状態を作る。
散らかすって意味でよく使われます。
この場合、次のような言い方ができますよ。
ーMy one year old uses his hands to eat. The food gets squished in his hands and it's hard to clean up afterwards.
「うちの一歳の息子は手を使って食べるので、手で食べ物をぐちゃぐちゃにして後から片付けるのが大変だ」
The food gets squished in his hands. 「食べ物が手の中で潰される」＝「食べ物を手でグチャグチャにする」
