“I would prefer...” が丁寧な言い方で、何かを頼むときに使うといいと思います。
例えば:
“I would prefer it if we kept the window closed. ” =「窓を開けないで欲しい」を丁寧に言います。
誰かが「中華料理食べに行こう！」って言われたけど食べたいときに : “I would prefer Japanese food” = 「和食の方がいい」を少し丁寧に伝えられます。
「〜のためであっても」= “even if it’s just for the purposes of〜

丁寧に聞きたいなら、この三つの例文は大丈夫です。"I want..."、 "I don't want..." 、"Don't..." は直接過ぎて言わない方がいいと思います。
