If you recognize someone or something, you know who that person/thing is.
In Britain the spelling is different - recognise.
Some example sentences are 'The sun was shining brightly so she did not recognize him at first' or 'Sophie recognized that this dog was her neighbor's dog'.
We can also use recognize to acknowledge the existence or truth, for example 'I recognize that God exists' or 'I recognize that I made a mistake in the exam'.
