ソフトウェアを起動する→activate
*activateは何かを"作動させるや" "活動的にする"という意味があります

アプリケーションを起動する→launch/ start /open (アプリを開くというイメージ）
I will launch the app.
computerなどを起動させる時は色々言い方がありますね。
