つまり、前年の同じ日に起こった大切なことを祝ったり思い出したりするための日 ということなので、
辞書的な定義としては、「1年に1回」でなければならないのですが、英語には他に言葉がないので、仕方なくanniversaryという言葉を使います。
あと、英語圏には仮に1周年であってもカップルが交際開始日を記念日として祝うような習慣はあまりないのではないとおそらく思います。
