It should be said that typically I usually would just say, "thank you," or, "thanks," as it is a given that you're saying thank you for these reasons, while also being quick to say as you're exiting the bus. Regardless, we can thank them, "for the ride," or, "for driving."

Simply saying 'thank you' is enough when you are getting off the bus. However if you want to be more specific or add a little more, you can say 'Thank you for the ride'. Personally, I just say thank you when I exit the bus.

Any of the three expressions above are correct. In the United States it isn't very common for the local native speakers to do so, but it is considered polite to do so. The bus driver will be happy to hear your appreciation for the bus ride. So you can say "Thank you (or thanks) for the ride" or a simple "Thank you" or "Thanks."

To appreciate means to be thankful for something, and expressing appreciation to someone is always a good way to show him/her that he/she is valued. Also, it can be good to tell the person what was appreciated or why they are appreciated because it is an extra way to help a person know why he/she is valued. Telling a person that he/she deserves something is a very endearing way to help him/her now that what he/she is doing is important and valuable. This expression may be used very rarely but can help to make a person feel much better about him/herself.
