  • You broke up there, what did you say?

  • You are breaking up.

  • I couldn’t hear you because of the bad connection.

ご質問ありがとうございます! 回線が悪くて声が聞こえないことを一言で”break up”と言います。 ・You are breaking up. 「(回線が悪くて)あなたの声が聞こえないよ」 ・You broke up there, what did you say? 「(回線が悪くて)声が聞こえませんでした。なんと言いましたか?)」 またはシンプルに ・I couldn’t hear you because of the bad connection. 「接続が悪かったのであなたの声が聞こえませんでした。」Can(Could)you say that again please?/Pardon me? 「もう一度言ってもらえますか?」というのもいいですね! 参考になると幸いです。

  • Sorry, could you repeat that last part please? I think we have a bad connection.

  • I didn’t quite catch what you just said? Could you repeat it please?

  • Pardon? Could you say that again please? I think we have a bad connection.

All of these examples will let your tutor know that you didn’t hear them and that this was because of a bad connection. All three examples politely ask the tutor to repeat what they just said.

  • Sorry but my internet connection is bad at the moment, I couldn't hear what you were saying.

Examples: My internet connection is slow right now, I couldn't hear what you said, could you repeat that please? I'm so sorry but my internet is playing up right now, I could't hear you, can you repeat what you said for me?

  • Im sorry you are breaking up, I didnt catch what you said?

  • Please could you repeat yourself, the line was breaking as you was speaking?

  • I couldnt hear you just then, our connection got lost for a few seconds.

When asking your teacher to repeat themselves, its always polite to say your manners with please and thank you. If the connection was on your end, it is always also polite to apologise as you are going to want them to repeat themselves. - Please could you repeat yourself, the line was breaking as you was speaking? This would be a polite way of asking your teacher to repeat what they just said

  • Sorry it's very glitchy - I can't hear you

  • Due to the connection, I can't catch what your're saying

During an online English lesson, when the internet connection is not very good and you couldn't hear what your teacher said because of the bad connection - you want to explain this. You wish to explain that. In that case, one of the above suggestions should be fine.

  • I'm sorry, but please could you repeat that as my internet connection is poor?

  • We have a poor connection, so please could you repeat that last sentence?

This is quite a common occurrence when teaching online as connections can vary, from lesson to lesson, or even during a lesson. So the polite way to respond is to ask the teacher to please repeat what was last said, by using one of the above questions.

  • breaking up

  • we have a bad connection.

When we cannot hear someone on the phone or internet we can say you are breaking up. This means it sounds like the other persons voice is breaking! We can also just say that we have a bad connection and politely ask 'could you please repeat that? We have a bad connection'.

  • I'm sorry, but the internet connection is not very good and I cannot hear you at times.

  • I apologize however I could not hear what you said due to the bad internet connection.

If you would like to explain to someone that you cannot hear them due to the bad internet connection, you can something like "I'm sorry, but the internet connection is not very good and I cannot hear you at times." or "I apologize however I could not hear what you said due to the bad internet connection.".

  • The connection was bad so I didn't hear you very well, please repeat teacher?

  • Please can you say that again? The connection was bad and I didn't hear you well.

  • This connection is horrible, I didn't catch what you said very well.

Use any of the sentences above if you would like to explain that the connection was bad and therefore you were not able to hear what was said clearly. The word 'catch' in the last sentence explains that the words were not caught by the ears, not received well. You can then ask the teacher to repeat what they said so you can hear them one more time, if this doesn't work, you can ask your teacher to type out what they are trying to say. "This connection is horrible. Please repeat what you said because I didn't hear you the first time." "I didn't hear a thing because of a bad connection, please say that again?"

  • Sorry I didn't catch that, could you repeat it please?

  • The connection was bad just now, would you mind repeating the last thing you said?

I think all of us teachers have had this problem at least once in our time teaching with DMM. It is normal for the connection to be a little poor at times depending on where we are or just depending on the quality of our Internet service. We don't mind repeating to our students if we say something and unfortunately the connection became a bit unstable. Either of these two sentences is a very polite way of asking us teachers to repeat what we just said.

  • You are breaking up and I can't hear you. My connection must be bad.

  • Can you please repeat that? I couldn't hear you due to my poor internet connection.

  • Sorry, my internet connection is bad, I could not hear what you were saying.

An apology or asking the teacher to repeat what was said can be a way to let the teacher know the connection is bad. I listed several different ways you can say it. Most teachers will be understanding to this common issue.

  • Sorry the connection cut out, I didn't hear what you said.

  • Sorry I didn't hear what you said because the connection cut out.

  • Sorry I didn't hear what you said because of the bad connection.

Here are three ways we can express to our teachers that we didn't hear what they said due to technical issues such as a bad connection. Notice in the first two examples, they are the same words but within a different structure. We can use the phrasal verb, "to cut out," to describe a kind of disconnection of WiFi or internet service. The last one uses the phrase, "..of the bad connection," to have the same effect.

When you want to tell your teacher that you cannot hear them because of a bad internet connection; then you may express this in the following ways: -Sorry, I couldn't hear what you said because of a bad internet connection. -I could not hear what you said because of a poor internet connection
