「写真を撮る」はtake a photo, take a pictureなどと表現します。集合写真を撮るときは、take a group photoといい、自撮りを撮るときは、take a photo of myselfやtake a selfieなどといいます。
「夏祭りに行った時、友達と写真を撮ったりしました」
-I took some photos with my friend(s) when we went to the summer festival.
-My friend(s) and I took some photos of us when we went to the summer festival together.
「友達と写真を撮ったりしました」は I took some pictures with my friends. と表現されるのが自然です。
「〜したりしました」という日本語のニュアンス（他にも色々したけれど、その中の一つとして写真を撮った、という響き）を出すには、some を入れたり、and stuff を付け加えたりするとより会話らしくなります。
例：
I went to a summer festival and took some pictures with my friends.
夏祭りに行って、友達と写真を撮ったりしました。
We took photos together and had a great time.
一緒に写真を撮ったりして、楽しく過ごしました。
