The first sentence here is talking about your personal view. 'Value' means importance of something. So if you value 'x' over 'y', then 'x' is simply more important than 'y'. The second sentence is more of a general statement rather than a personal opinion. I would use the word 'qualifications' if you are talking about academic knowledge because it is essentially the knowledge you are gaining from experience that is important.
