  • What are you thinking?

  • What are you thinking about?

What are you thinking? 何考えてるの? こちらから何かを言ったが、反応がなく、何か考えている様子ですと、上記の表現がナチュラルです。 会話が止まってしまったりしている時には、What are you thinking about? のほうがよりナチュラルな表現になります。「どんなことを今考えているの?」というニュアンスになります。 是非使ってみてください!

  • 1. You're rather quiet - are you OK?

  • 2. Penny for your thoughts.

When someone you are with starts to be unresponsive or quiet, it could mean one of three things: they are bored or a little tired and wish to let their mind wander a little; they are in a bad mood because of something you did or said; they simply wish they were in another place and perhaps with someone else - in other words, they are not enthusiastic about you! To cater for any of these possibilities, you may say, "You're rather quiet - are you OK?" If this person is honest, they should tell you what's on their mind. "Penny for your thoughts" is an old expression that means: "What are you thinking?" Technically it means: I'll give you a penny if you tell me what you are thinking. It's silly to give a penny or receive one for your thoughts so no one ever does.
一緒にいる人の反応が悪くなったり静かになったとき、三つのうちのどれかの理由だと思います。退屈になったか、少し疲れてちょっとボーっとしたいのか、あなたの発言にちょっとムっとしてるかです。もしかすると違う誰かと他の場所にいたいと思っているかもしれません。言い換えればあなたに対して全く興味がないといってもいいでしょう。静かになった理由がどうであれ、こういうことができます。 "You're rather quiet - are you OK?" もし相手が正直なら、ちゃんと相手の気持ちを打ち明けてくれるでしょう。 "Penny for your thoughts" ちょっと古い表現ですが、 "What are you thinking?" の意味合いで使います。実際は: 何考えてるか教えてくれたらお金をあげる、という意味です。もちろんお金を払ったりする必要はありません。

何考えてるの? もともとA penny for your thoughtsは、 「思っていること教えてくれたら、お金あげるよ」でしたが、簡略化されて 「何考えてるの?」 と使えるようになりました。 What's on your mind? A penny for your thoughts. 何考えてるの?何考えてるか教えてよ。 まさにこういうシチュエーションでうってつけのイディオムですm(__)m

  • Hello! You were miles away!

  • You're so quiet, a penny for your thoughts?

1. Hello! You were miles away! When someone is lost in thought then you can wave your hand in front of their face while saying to them that they were miles away. The phrase, "You were miles away" refers to the fact that physically the person was with you, but their thoughts had drifted off therefore they were so quiet. 2. You're so quiet, a penny for your thoughts? This is another expression to use when a companion or friend has gone quiet during the conversation and it is obvious that they are thinking about something else. The phrase, "a penny for your thoughts?" means that you want to know what the person is thinking about.

  • You were miles away, what are you thinking about?

  • A penny for your thoughts

if you say, you were miles away when someone is thinking, it means they look like they are somewhere else in their imagination, they are not with you in their mind, they are thinking or daydreaming about something else. eg. My teacher was miles away, I had to ask the same question 3 times before he answered. A penny for your thoughts is said when you want to know what another person is thinking, usually because they have been quiet for a while. Is is common to say a penny for your thoughts if someone looks like they are thinking about something else or not listening to you. eg. You were staring into space, a penny for your thoughts
何かを考えている人にむかってMiles awayという場合、それはあたかもその人が考えなどに夢中になっていて想像の世界へいってしまっていて、心ではあなたと一緒にいないというような意味に使われます。 eg. My teacher was miles away, I had to ask the same question 3 times before he answered. 僕の先生はうわのそらだったよ。答えてくれるまでに3回も尋ねたよ。 他の誰かが何を考えているのか尋ねたいときに、A penny for your thoughtsという言葉が使われます。特にふたりともしばらく無言になったときなどに使われ、また、相手が何かで上の空になっていて、自分の話をきいていないときにも使うことができるフレーズです。 eg. You were staring into space, a penny for your thoughts なんか上の空だね。何考えてるの?

  • Is something bothering you?

  • What are you thinking about right now?

If we are with somebody and they are very quiet, we want to know why they aren't talking so we usually ask them what they are thinking of. Of course, we can't read their minds, so if we really want to know we can ask. We can sometimes be concerned that they are bored or annoyed at us. "Is something bothering you?": In this sentence, we are asking the person if something is annoying or worrying them. You may not want to hear the answer, depending on the situation. The second sentence is a very straightforward way of asking the other person what they are thinking in that moment

What is on your mind? What are you thinking? What are you thinking about? When you are on a date, or with someone in general, and want to know what they are thinking about, you can ask one of these three questions. Personally, I feel that the first is less direct, and therefore better for such a situation. Pick one, use it, pick another, see how it works out for you. And, good luck with it all. I hope this helps. Have a great day. Will
