四十九日という意味をちゃんと伝えるとしたら
attend my grandfather's Shijukunichi, which is the memorial service for the 49th day after his deathでもOKです。

この場合、次のような言い方ができますよ。
ーI'm going to my grandfather's forty-ninth day memorial service since his death today, so I took a paid holiday and came back to my home town.
「今日、祖父の四十九日の法要に行くので、有給をとって実家に帰ってきた」
「四十九日」は少し長くなりますが、forty-ninth day memorial service since his death と言えます。
to take a paid holiday で「有給を取る」
