例：
I bought a cantaloupe and put it in the fridge, but I forgot about it. By the time I remembered it was in the fridge, it had already gone bad.
「メロンを買って冷蔵庫に入れていたことを忘れて、気がついた時にはもうダメになっていた」

『気付いた時には手遅れだった。』
また『[気付く](https://eikaiwa.dmm.com/uknow/questions/83233/)べきではなかった』というような意味で伝えるのであれば、
I shouldn't have noticed it.
『それに気付くべきではなかった』
I shouldn't have seen it.
『それを見るべきではなかった』
というようにも言えますね！
