  • This breed has been used as a hunting dog for a long time. So, he is very smart.

メスの犬なら、she is very smart. What kind of dog is that? Is it a German shepherd? No, he is a mixed breed. He is a mutt.

  • This breed has been trained as hunting dogs from a long time ago and are highly intelligent

  • This breed of dog was used for hunting in the past, they're extremely smart.

Native speakers will say like this: “This breed of dog was used for hunting in the past. They're extremely smart”. There are lots of other ways to say it, but this one is the most accurate and most commonly used. Here is an example on how to use this in a conversation: A: Your dog seems really clever. Did you train him yourself? B: I did, but they're naturally smart. They were used for hunting in the past as well.
“This breed of dog was used for hunting in the past. A: Your dog seems really clever. Did you train him yourself?(あなたの犬はとても賢そうですね。 B: I did, but they're naturally smart. They were used for hunting in the past as well.(はい。

  • They used to be hunting dogs and are very smart

  • This breed used to be hunting dogs and are very clever

  • A long time ago these used to be hunting dogs and are very smart

By saying something 'used to be' means that it is not like that or used like that now but was before or some time ago If something is very clever they can also be called 'smart'

  • My previous dogs used to be hunting breeds because they were very intelligent.

  • I used to have hunting dogs, which were of very intelligent breeds.

Sentence One - 'previous dogs' refers to the dogs you use to have in the past. You can then state that they were very smart (intelligent) because of the kind of breed(s) they were. Sentence Two - Native speakers often use the phrase 'used to have' to refer to something that someone had in the past but not anymore. You can then explain that the particular breed was the reason your dogs were smart. For example, 'My dogs were smart because they were of hunting breeds."
例えば: 'My dogs were smart because they were of hunting breeds.'

  • This dog was once used as a hunting dog and this still shows in it's intelligence

  • This intelligent dog was initally bred for hunting.

The sentence "This dog was once used as a hunting dog and this still shows in it's intelligence," implies that although the dog isn't used for hunting anymore and is more of a pet, you can see that it was once used for hunting because it is still very intelligent. "This intelligent dog was initally bred for hunting." The word "initally means "originally, in the early stages." So we can use this when implying that the dog was once used for hunting.
"This dog was once used as a hunting dog and this still shows in it's intelligence" (この犬はかつては猟犬として使われていました。 "This intelligent dog was initally bred for hunting."
