本音と建前って英語でなんて言うの?

特にビジネスや政治の場や目上の人がいる場だと、本音を言わず、建前えで話す事が多いと思います。

本音とは、 「腹の中で[感じている](https://eikaiwa.dmm.com/uknow/questions/52890/)こと」 建て前とは、 「公の場に表れていること」 という感覚で、 3パターンをお伝えします! (それぞれ、対比の方法を、変えてみました) ------------------------------------------- ①his private opinion and public stance 『彼の[個人的](https://eikaiwa.dmm.com/uknow/questions/77779/)意見(本音)と、 公的な立ち位置(建て前)』 【private と public】 形容詞と形容詞で対比 ------------------------------------------- ②what he really feels and what he is supposed to say 『彼が感じていること(本音)と、 こう言いなさいと社会から期待されていること(建て前)』 【what SV と howSV】 疑問詞SVと疑問詞SVで対比 ------------------------------------------- ③his true intentions and words 『彼の本当の[意図](https://eikaiwa.dmm.com/uknow/questions/65381/)(本音)と、 単なるコトバ(建て前)』 【intentions と words】 名詞と名詞で対比 ------------------------------------------- 日本的な「本音と建て前」って、 説明しずらいですよね。 「建て前」を「a lie(うそ)」と訳すのは、 かなり意味が激しくなってしまうため、 避けた方が良いかと思います。 私は、日本文化になじみのない方に 「建て前」の補足説明する時は、 "We consider this to be a social lubricant."

”I only say things to be myself and not be a brown nose."

When someone has a personal opinion about something, for a variety of reasons, they may choose not to voice this opinion in public. It may not be a widely acceptable opinion or may not be 'politically correct.' It may not even be legal to voice such opinions! So these are someone's 'private thoughts,' 'private opinions,' or 'private expressions.' However, in public, such thoughts may be voiced in a much more palatable way for public ears. "Excuse me, but did you say that you try to avoid disabled people to your friend?" "Oh, no, my private expressions were taken out of context! I actually said that people with physical challenges should have special individual care to enable them to integrate fully with the wider community."
何かについて個人的な意見をもっているとき、色んな理由があるけど、その意見をみんなにいうのを避けることもありますよね。恐らくみんなが賛成してくれるとも自分の立場的に言うべき話ではないという時があるでしょう。もしかすると法的な理由かもしれませんが。つまり、 'private thoughts,' 'private opinions,' または 'private expressions.'ということができます。しかし、みんなの前では、みんなの耳通りの良い角のない言葉でいうでしょうね。 例 "Excuse me, but did you say that you try to avoid disabled people to your friend?" "Oh, no, my private expressions were taken out of context! I actually said that people with physical challenges should have special individual care to enable them to integrate fully with the wider community."

  • their private thoughts vs. their public appearance

your true self - this is the person you are "behind closed doors," the real you the person you present to the world - this is the person that you present or show to the outside world, meaning everyone around you, or everyone who is not you inner - outward private - public these are antonyms; exact opposites appearance - this is what you appear to be to others; you can change your behavior or your physical look to portray anything that you want others to see "Keeping up appearances" - To keep up your appearance literally means to make sure that you are physically put together and neat. So, this phrase means to put on a show; to cover up imperfections and the truth; to fool everyone else into believing that everything is completely fine, even when it is not by making sure that you look perfect on the outside e.g. I really hate parties, but I go to the ones I'm invited to just to keep up appearances. We signed the divorce papers months ago, but we still wear our wedding rings just to keep up appearances. I just can't stand the thought of overhearing our neighbors gossiping about the divorce!
your true self - これは"behind closed doors"(閉じた扉の向こう)のあなた、本当のあなたです。 the person you present to the world - これは、外の世界(周りの人や自分以外の人)に演出している自分です。 inner - outward private - public これらは対義語(正反対)です。 appearance - これは他人から見えるあなたです。行動や見た目を変えて他人に見られたいように表現することができます "Keeping up appearances" - To keep up your appearanceは、文字通り、見た目をきちんときれいにしていることを意味します。ですので、このフレーズは、すべてが完璧ではない場合も周りの人に完璧であると思わせられるよう外見を完璧にして、不完全さや真実を隠して格好よく見せるという意味です。 【例文】 I really hate parties, but I go to the ones I'm invited to just to keep up appearances.(私は本当にパーティーが嫌いですが、見た目を維持するために招待されたものには行きます) We signed the divorce papers months ago, but we still wear our wedding rings just to keep up appearances.(私たちは数ヶ月前に離婚届書に署名しましたが、まだ建前上結婚指輪をつけています) I just can't stand the thought of overhearing our neighbors gossiping about the divorce! (私は離婚に関する隣人の噂の立ち聞きに我慢ができません!)

  • true desire and feelings vs. publicly stated opinion

    play icon

本音と建前は数十年前から日本文化特有の現象だということで説明されてきました。 日本語が英語になることが珍しくない今なら hon-ne tatemae と英語になっていただろうと思わないでもないですが、日本人も、英語文化の方もずいぶん変わってきたので、50代の私は、本音と建前は日本特有と強調することももうないのじゃないかと思っています。 Hon-ne is defined as true desires and feelings という説明はわりと良く見かけます。 私の友人はkokoro-talk と言ってましたが、確かに本音は論理的なフィルターがかかっていない欲求や感情ですよね。 Tatemae is a publicly stated opinion という説明も私は好きです。自分の立場ならこうするべきと言う判断で口にする人が多いですよね。 本音と建て前は結構みんな理解しているという前提で、さらに議論が出来ると良いですよね。

"his private opinion and public stance." His private opinion is his true feelings. " His true feelings and what he is supposed to do." This means he feels one way but he has to do something else for his public stance which he doesn't agree with.
例文 "his private opinion and public stance." 彼の個人的な意見と公の立場 His private opinionは彼の本当の気持ちです。 例文 " His true feelings and what he is supposed to do." 彼の本当の気持ちとしなければいけないこと。 彼は思っていることがあるが、納得はしていないけれど、公の立場上他にしなければいけないことがあるということです。

  • His private opinion versus his public stance.

1. His private opinion versus his public stance. His private opinion represents his true or real feelings. This is what he really feels on the inside. Versus = as opposed to His public stance represents what the person says and does in public. This may or may not be the same as his private opinion. A good example is in countries where freedom of speech is not allowed. People may feel one way privately, but may express different views publicly.
例文 1. His private opinion versus his public stance. 彼の個人的な意見対彼の公での立場 His private opinionは彼が本当に思っていることです。心の中で本当に感じていることです。 Versus = ~に対して His public stance は、人前での発言や行動です。これは個人的な意見と同じこともあれば、そうでないこともあります。 良い例は言論の自由が認められていない国です。人は個人的に思っていることがあっても、人前では異なった意見を言うことがあります。
