「佇む」には二つの意味がありますよね。「しばらくの間同じ場所に居る」状況と「周辺を徘徊する」状況の微妙に違う様。上記は前者の例です。
The coach stood there silently, watching over the students so we wouldn't get hurt =コーチは私達生徒が怪我をしないように静かに佇んで見守っていた。
He lingered quietly =彼は静かに佇んでいた
Lingerとはうろつく、消えそうで消えないと言う意味です。人の行動を表す時に使う場合、少し不気味な様子に聞こえます。
Although all the guys had left and it was only girls at the party, he stayed and lingered quietly in the corner =男性陣はとうに帰り女子しか残っていないパーティにその彼は残り、隅の方で静かに佇んだ。

「彼は彼女が来るまでに駅の改札の近くに静かに佇んだ」= He quietly stood near the station ticket gates waiting until she arrived.
「静かに」= quietly
「佇む」= to stand still for a while; to stand still; to linger; to loiter
