"I was working on something right up until class." states that you were doing something until the start of your lesson.
"down to the wire" is an expression that means something was been done right up til a certain time or a deadline.

この文章は、レッスンが始まるまであなたが「何かをしていた」ということを伝えることができるでしょう。
"down to the wire"（ぎりぎりまで）というフレーズをつけることで、「レッスンがはじまるぎりぎりまで」何かをしていたことがわかります。

質問内容が「直前まで〇〇してました」と、完了を示しているのが分かりますね。
ですので現在完了形を使います。untilを使って、until the last minute「直前まで」とします。「最後の１分まで」という表現が「直前」を表しています。
そして「ずーっとそれをしていた」というニュアンスを入れたいので、進行形を入れます。
そうすると、I have been doing XX until the last minuteとなります。
To express that you were busy with something until just before your class you may use the following phrases;

These are all wonderful ways to express that you were busy with something until the last minute.

I was busy watching a movie up to just before my lesson started.
I was deeply engrossed in a novel until my lesson started.
If you are watching a movie, your focus will definitely be on the movie and nothing else. This can make you lose timing as well. You may be lucky if the movie finishes just before your lesson starts.
If so, you may say:
I was busy watching a movie up to just before my lesson started.
However, a different scenario will have occurred if you were deeply engrossed (having all your attention absorbed) in a novel because the only thing that will alert you that the lesson has started will be the teacher's call.
So, you may say:
I was deeply engrossed in a novel until my lesson started.
映画を観ているのであれば、映画以外のものには集中していません。
レッスンのタイミングを逃す可能性もありますね。レッスンが始まる前に、映画が終わるのであれば、幸運かもしれません。
もしそうならば、以下のように言うかもしれません。
I was busy watching a movie up to just before my lesson started.
レッスン前はちょうど映画を観ていて忙しかった。
しかし、小説に深く没頭していたのであれば、講師からの呼び出しに気づかず違うシナリオがあるかもしれません。
以下のように言うかもしれません。
I was deeply engrossed in a novel until my lesson started.
I was doing ___ right up until our lesson started.
Up until our lesson started I was doing _____.
If you would like to tell someone that right up until the lesson you were doing something, you can say something like "I was doing ___ right up until our lesson started." or "Up until our lesson started I was doing _____.". Here is an example with an action in it. "I was actually taking a nap right up until our lesson started.".
All three of these sentences can be used interchangeably to have the same meaning when talking about doing stuff before a lesson. Notice that in the first two examples, that we can use all the same words but structure the sentence differently, but we need to include information about what we were doing. The last example is much more general, and we don't need to provide that similar information about what specific activity we were doing.
You can use any of the above two sentences to explain to the person that you were busy the entire time up until just before the lesson started.
