Smoking is only permitted outside in designated areas.
Designated - mean that it is an area just for smoking. Some offices have an area where their staff can go and smoke.
Other offices don't mind where someone smokes as long as it is outside.
Hope this helps

"May I direct you to the smoking area just outside the building?"
"Oh yes, thanks for telling me."there is also a standard phrase which may be used also. It may seem a little robotic but it is very popular: "For the convenience of all visitors, there is a designated smoking area just outside the building."

We can either use the construction, "there is a," or simply put, "smoking area," as the main noun and in front of the sentence. We can also say that it is only allowed in, "designated areas."
