「ヒントのつもりで」って英語でなんて言うの？

「ヒントのつもりで言ったのに、ヒントにならなかったね」＝ 「I was trying to give you a hint but it didn't work/it was too difficult!」、「It was supposed to be a hint but it didn't work/it was too difficult!」

その時の「つもり」は「I was trying to ～」や「It was supposed to be ～」という言い方がいいと思います。

「I was trying to＋動詞の原形」は「私は～しようとしていた」という直訳になります。
「It was supposed to be ＋名詞」＝「～するはず」を意味します。

自然な英語では、こういう表現になります。

I was trying to give you a hint　
It was supposed to be a hint

• "I meant it as a hint."
  「それをヒントとして言ったつもりだったんだけど」という意味です。「つもり」という意図を表現しています。
  例: "I meant it as a hint, but it didn't seem to help."

  「ヒントをあげようとしていた」という意味です。ヒントを提供する意図を強調しています。
