My two favourite expressions would be:

Time heals all wounds - this means that no matter how bad the pain is, it will decrease over time.
Therefore, time is the best doctor. It heals you. It heals your "wound".
A wound is generally a physical sore that has been received, but here it refers to any type of situation causing pain.
2.
Tomorrow is ANOTHER day - this means that today will end. Tomorrow will come and things will feel different. After time, your feelings will change. Whatever you are feeling today, is not the end of the world.

As time passes, problems suffered today may gradually seem or affect you less and less until the pain completely disappears. Time, the great healer, will have done its job. This is a proverbial saying meaning that with the passage of time, the pain your friend is feeling after his girlfriend broke up with him will gradually disappear.
The idiom 'time heals all wounds' can be used to comfort someone who has just failed an exam for example, and is feeling very sad. You can tell that person not to worry, because 'time heals all wounds'. This actually means that with the passage of time, the sadness of having failed the exam will disappear.

This is true that time heals all wounds. With time, the pain we feel at the start will lessen. Tell your friend that the more time that passes will allow them to be able to look back on the situation and not feel as sad. They might even be able to see a brighter side of the situation as time goes on.
All of these are popular expressions that people use to explain that after some time, everything gets easier. "Time heals all wounds" is so popular that it can be considered cliche, as it is often printed on posters or other inspirational materials. For sending a card, it is perfectly appropriate, but when speaking to a friend, it may sound like you are generalizing their pain to a cheesy saying.
"Give it some time" and "You'll feel better in time" might sound more genuine than a popular cliche, so it might be better to use these if a friend is truly in pain. "Give it some time" literally means that they should wait awhile, and will probably feel better soon. "You'll feel better in time" is probably the most simple and clear, but sometimes sad people don't like being told how they will feel, so I think "Give it some time" is probably what I would prefer to use.
