「元〜日本代表」を「① Ex-Japanese international」と言います。
他国の選手も同じように呼ばれています。以下の例をご覧ください：

何故「player」は入らないかと言うと、サッカーの話をしている前提があるからです。ない場合、「Ex-Japanese international footballer」を使いましょう。
＊サッカーは日本・米国の名称で、他はフットボールと呼んでいます。
また「② Retired Japanese international」も使用可能です。

サッカーというかフットボールというかはアメリカ英語がイギリス英語によるところですので適宜に使い分けてみて下さい。
問題はその「元サッカー日本代表」がサッカーをもう辞めたのか、それとも日本代表ではないだけで現役サッカー選手なのかによって表現方法が変わるという事です。 今回の場合は、後者の「日本代表ではないだけで現役サッカー選手」を表現してみました。
スポーツにおける「日本代表」はNational Teamに所属しているので、「national team スポーツ名 player」や「national スポーツ名 player」で表現します。 スポーツ名を会話の中ですでに述べている場合は、スポーツ名を言わなくても理解できます。 例えば、サッカーの話をしていて、
He is a former national player.
というと、「彼は元 日本代表選手」ではなく「彼は元 サッカーの日本代表選手」というニュアンスになりますので、話の流れによってスポーツ名を入れるか入れないかを判断して下さいね。
international と national の違いは、前者は「国際」を意味しますので日本人であっても海外チーム所属（または外国籍取得）という形で試合に出場する（出場した）場合（特に複数回出場）で、後者は日本人であってもなくても日本の代表選手として出場する（出場した）場合に使います。

元（もと～～）や前（ぜん）でよく使われるのが(a) formerです。
そして日本代表は、"Japan international" という表現が使われます。
ちなみにサッカー選手なら"Japan international footballer"です。
これが（国際試合の）サッカー代表選手という意味になります。
a former Japan international footballer＝元サッカー日本代表。
ちなみにイングランド代表なら England international footballers:サッカーイングランド代表。
"former Japanese soccer team" this means that they used to play for the Japanese soccer team.
"ex-Japanese soccer player" this means that he was on the Japanese soccer team.
"former Japanese soccer team" this means that they used to play for the Japanese soccer team.
"ex-Japanese soccer player" this means that he was on the Japanese soccer team.
Former＝前の、元の。Former Japanese soccer team＝元サッカー日本代表チーム。Ex-＝前の。Ex-Japanese soccer player＝元サッカー日本代表選手。両方とも同じ意味です。
"They use to play soccer on the Japanese national team"
"They once a soccer player for the Japanese team"
"At one point, they played soccer for the Japanese national team"
If you wanted to express that someone used to be on the Japanese national soccer team, you could say any of the following: "They use to play soccer on the Japanese national team", "They once a soccer player for the Japanese team" or "At one point, they played soccer for the Japanese national team".
「昔サッカーの日本代表選手だった」は次のように言えます。
"They use to play soccer on the Japanese national team"（彼らは昔サッカーの日本代表の選手だった）
"They once a soccer player for the Japanese team"（彼らは昔サッカーの日本代表の選手だった）
"At one point, they played soccer for the Japanese national team"（彼らは昔サッカーの日本代表の選手だった）

スポーツ選手というものは、スポットライトに照らされている期間はそう長くはありません。しかし、時間というものは失われるものであり、どのスター選手もいつかは消えていくことになります。
"EX-" もしくは Former は、元～という意味になります。ですのでex national team playerで、元ナショナルチーム選手となります。
"Once upon a time" he was a major national footbal star... Now he is retired.
昔は、彼はメジャーナショナルチームのフットボールスターだったが、今は引退している。
used to play for Japan on the national team
かつて日本代表チームでプレーしていた
上記のように英語で表現することもできます。
Kei used to play for Japan on the national team.
ケイはかつて、日本代表チームでプレーしていました。
