ただ、shogi だけだとわからない人の方が多いと思うので、a game like chess（チェスみたいなゲーム）や Japanese chess（日本版チェス）のように言うと伝わりやすいかと思います。

「similar」は「似ている」という意味の形容詞です。
「similar to chess」で「チェスに似ている」となります。
