Thief
A person who steals from another.
This term is especially used when the thief steals without the use of force or threats.
Mugger
A person who attacks or robs another in public.
Robber
A person who takes or attempts to take valuable items from another by force.

There are different types of thieves. The names depends on how they steal.For example burglar, pick pocketer.
A burglar is a person that breaks into people's houses and steals from them.
A pick pocketer steals from people's pockets or bags while they are not looking.

If we are talking about people who steal money from a bank etc. we call them a bank robber.
If someone stole my wallet when I was at a cafe, I would say that thief stole my wallet.

If someone steals something from you, the most natural way to call it out would be to yell "Stop! THIEF!"
When shouting something you can say "Stop that..." or "Catch that..." fallowed by one of the words.
Thief / Robber and pick pocket are all terms used to describe someone that steals.
Pick pocket is a person who steals stuff from peoples pockets, but a thief and robber could steal anything.
Use the words above if you need to get the attention of others when someone is trying to steal from you.
In South Africa, there are certain places where, when a situation like this takes place people shout "Vimba!" which means to catch or confine.
"Stop him! He just took my handbag!!"
"What out, there's a thief around, he just snatched my phone!"

Someone who steals or takes from others what does not belong to him can be called any of the following:-
1. Thief
Example: Look that thief just stole my purse! catch him!
2. Pickpocket
Example: If you see someone approaching you on the street, be careful, he might be a pickpocket.
3. Burglar
Example: The burglar broke into our house and stole our TV!

Someone who steals or robs from people in English is most commonly referred to as a "Thief" or "Robber". If you wanted to shout to get people's attention if someone has robbed something from you on the street, the most effective thing to shout would be: "Stop that thief from getting away".

I prefer to say "a thief" and you can just scream it and people will try to help you then. A robber is usually someone who takes your stuff with aggressive behaviour, whereas, a thief operates very quietly.
