"try not to-"で「〜するように努力してる」となります。
”as little as”は「できるだけ少しの」なので、「できるだけ少ししか使わないようにする」となります。
２つ目の例文の
"would rather not-"は”doesn't want to”を丁寧に言った表現です。
❶ I don’t want to use it, if possible.
(なるべくなら使いたくない)という意味です。
I don’t want to use the heater, if possible.
(なるべくなら暖房を使いたくない)。
I don’t want to use the eraser top, if possible.
(なるべくなら、シャーペンの上の消しゴムを使いたくない)。

「なるべく使いたくない」は、
"I want to avoid using too much."
"avoid ~ing"は「～を（意識的に）避ける」という意味です。
"I want to avoid using the AC/heater too much because it'll cause dryness in the air."
「エアコン/暖房を使うと空気が乾燥するので、なるべく使いたくない。」
"cause dryness in the air"は、「空気を乾燥させる」という意味です。
