We may say that two people are having a wedding anniversary on a particular day. Or, more likely we would talk about the wedding anniversary celebration which may take the form of a a formal invitation to a dinner and dance - or more casually, just a few people meeting at home for some quiet drinks and snacks.
An anniversary is the date on which an event took place in a previous year. By definition our birthdays are actually an anniversary of the day we were born! But we don't use this term for birthdays, however, like birthdays we often celebrate an anniversary with a party or a gift.
These are the traditional gifts given on wedding anniversaries in the UK:

2ND YEAR: Cotton
3RD YEAR: Leather
4TH YEAR: Fruit & Flowers, or Linen & Silk

6TH YEAR: Iron / Candy

9TH YEAR: Pottery
10TH YEAR: Tin/ Aluminum

An anniversary marks a year after an event took place.
The correct term to use is 'wedding anniversary'.
It is not grammatically incorrect to say 'marriage anniversary', but rather say 'wedding anniversary'.
You do not always have to mention what the anniversary is for, you could always rather refer to the number of years you are celebrating. For example 'Happy second anniversary' for someone who is celebrating an event for the second year.
Our Weddng anniversary is on the 3rd of September...I celebrate it with my wife!
Our "Wedding anniversary" is a "sacred date" and "woe betide" any man or woman who forgets this important date!
Anniversaries are counted in terms of "time served" (hahha) and gifts are given:
25TH YEAR: Silver /30TH YEAR: Pearl/ 35TH YEAR: Coral /40TH YEAR: Ruby/
45TH YEAR: Sapphire/ 50TH YEAR: Gold/ 55TH YEAR: Emerald
60TH YEAR: Diamond
