例えば、
If you don't mind me asking, why are you here alone and crying?ー細かいことかもしれませんが、どうしてここで一人で泣いているの？
If it's not too much to ask, can you tell me what is the matter with you?ー細かいことかもしれませんが、いったいあなたどうしたの？
以上は、こういう余計なことを聞くときは個人的にはよく使っています。
どうぞご参考の程度までにして下されば嬉しいです。
この両方の言い方は「別にあえて聞くほどでもないかもしれないけれど」という意味が含んでいますので、このシチュエーションに適切な表現になると思います。
「やっぱり気になるので質問してみたい」という部分は it's on my mind so I want to ask you about it で言うことができます。
「細かいことかもしれませんが、どうして赤ではなくピンクを選んだんですか？」というのは It's probably not that important but why did you choose pink and not red と表現することができます。
