  • That is not something we typically do.

"That is not something we typically do." Typically - What is common or popular to do or not common or popular to do. For example... "This is typically the time Mark arrives." "Typically, the weather is cold this month!" "We do not typically eat outside during the winter."
"That is not something we typically do." This is typically the time Mark arrives. Typically, the weather is cold this month! We do not typically eat outside during the winter.

  • It would be weird to do that in Japan.

All of these work for absolutely anything that you would deem uncommon. This goes beyond just introducing your opposite sexed friends to your family.

  • It's a rarity in Japan

    play icon

  • It's not the norm in Japan

    play icon

If something is a rarity it means that it is not frequent or is rarely seen. 'Not the norm' means that something is not normal behaviour or typical. "It is not the norm to take off your shoes on entering someone's home in the UK."
"It is not the norm to take off your shoes on entering someone's home in the UK."

  • It is not very common to introduce friends of the opposite sex to parents

  • It is not an ordinary thing for someone to introduce his or her friend of the opposite gender to their parents

    play icon

「日常的ではない」 -"It is not very common", "It is not an ordinary thing" ※細かくいうと、"common"は「一般的な」で"ordinary"は「普通のこと」というニュアンスの違いはあります。 「異性の友だち」は、"friends who are opposite sex"と関係代名詞で説明しても良いですし、"his or her friend of the opposite gender"とofで説明しても間違いではありません。

  • It's uncommon in Japan

Something that is common is familiar to the majority of people. Therefore if something is 'uncommon' it is the opposite of common, meaning that many people do not do this thing, or know of it, or approve of it.

  • It is unheard of

  • It is not the norm

"It is unheard of" This is a term used when something is very uncommon, 'Unheard' is taken from the word 'Heard' 'to be heard', so to be 'Unheard' is something you do not hear nor see. "It is not the norm" A casual term used, the word 'norm' is taken from 'normal' or 'normality'. so if it is Not the norm is is not normal.
"It is not the norm"(それは一般的ではありません) = カジュアルな表現です。'

If something happens alot then it is said to be 'common' so if it doesn't happen much then it is 'not very common' you can also say 'it doesn't happen often' or 'it's not usual to do that'
'it doesn't happen often' 'it's not usual to do that' (それはあまりない)
