この例ですと、アメリカ人とイタリア人はほとんど同じ動機を持っているように読めます。
僕が使った「When they think they can」は「聞く」ではなく、
「○○になれると思うと」になります。「When they hear they can」よりもこっちの方が自然に聞こえます。
何故でしょう、何かを「聞いて」行動を取るという概念に違和感があるからだと思います。
文化的な違いかもしれませんが、例えば。。。
日本人は他人から何かを「聞く」と行動を取ると言えるかもしれないですね。

Americans take action when they hear they can become heroes.
「アメリカ人はヒーローになれると聞けば行動する」という表現は英語で "Americans take action when they hear they can become heroes." と言います。「take action」は「行動する」を意味し、「when they hear they can become heroes」は「ヒーローになれると聞けば」を意味します。
例えば、イタリア人についても含めて表現する場合： "Americans take action when they hear they can become heroes, while Italians take action when they hear they can be popular." 「アメリカ人はヒーローになれると聞けば行動し、イタリア人はモテると聞けば行動する。」
