Putting someone on hold means you temporarily suspend the phone call whilst you attend another task. If the other person is lucky (or unlucky?!) there may be "Music on Hold" (MOH) which is music that is used to fill the silence.

待ち時間が短いことを強調するために
「Could you hold on for a second?」 （少しだけお待ちいただけますか？）

『for a second』というのが正しい言い方ですが、forを言わずに
「Could you hold on a second?」あるいはsecondを省略して
「Could you hold on a sec?」という人も多いですね。
また、『hold the line』（電話を切らずに待つ）という表現を使い、
「Could you hold the line for a moment?」
（少しだけ電話を切らないでお待ちいただけますか？）というのも一般的です。
「少しの間、待つ」という意味の英語は
wait a moment やwait a second という言います。

Using all of these phrases are good ways to express to the other person to stay on the line. Here is an example: Hello, sorry I am just on another call at the moment, stay on the line please, I will quickly finish up with my other call. Okay, no problem.
Here are three quick responses that we can give to tell someone, "to wait," or, "to hold," on the line until we can speak to them again or connect them over. We can also say, "just a moment," as this refers to waiting until they are available again.
When telling someone on the phone to hang on or to hold on you can politely say;
