When a swear/curse word has been blocked out in a film or song lyric by using a certain sound this is what we would refer to has the word being 'bleeped out'.
If the written word has been altered then we would refer to this as censorship or the word has been 'censored'.
In most instances it is only the vowel of the word that is censored or bleeped.
"Bleep" and "censor"
These phrases/terms used for when there is a swear word that has been covered up so you cannot hear the actual swear word, often you will hear a bleep (tone, almost like a horn).
'censor' is the term used to cover up something that might be rude or cause offense. censoring, censorship censored.
"Bleep". A bleep is a short high-pitched sound that is often placed over swear/curse words in media broadcasts. When a word is blocked out with one of these sounds we say it has been 'bleeped out'.
"Censor". Similarly, to censor something means to block out or cut parts of it which are unacceptable.
"Grawlix". The official name for a series of symbols to represent an obscene or swear word is a grawlix. They originated in comic books, but now it is common for other parts of the media to use grawlixes.
In writing, when we censor a swear word with this symbol * it is called an asterisk. Sometimes people will use a series of symbols such as @!%$ when they want to write a swear word but the symbols don't represent a specific letter. They are simply used so as not to be so vulgar. I hope that this helps! :)

A bleep-censor is added by the broadcast technician when the footage of the film or ad is edited. This is normally done with a 5 second delay in the live content, providing time for the censor audio feed.
Profanity is considered inappropriate for many people, and that is why you will find that in movies, especially, swearing is faded out, or censored out.
You do now get swearing that doesn't offend too many people, so you will be able to turn it on or off as with subtitles.
