調べるより現地の人に聞く方がいいって英語でなんて言うの？

道に迷った場合でもオススメを聞く場合でも使える言い回しです。

「旅行する時、自分でなんとかしようとするより地元の人に聞いた方が良い。」というニュアンス。
「地元の人」は local people
figure things out は「なんとかする」
on one's own は「自力で」

2) The best way to get help when you are traveling is to ask the people who live there for assistance. This is better than trying to do it yourself.
「旅行中に助けてもらう一番の方法はそこに住んでいる人に頼むことだ。自分でやろうとするよりはるかに良い。」
「地元の人」は the people who live there とも言えるでしょう。
