Clique とは同じ人種や、共通の趣味、部活などを元にしたグループを指します。アメリカでは中学、高校でとてもよく目にする光景ですが、排他的なグループが多く、若干ネガティブな印象がある言葉でもあります。
例えば "The popular girls form a clique and only hang out with one another" (学年で人気の女子はグループを作ってお互いとしか遊ばないことにしている）など。

People from the same country tend to hang out together.
この場合、次のような言い方ができますよ。
ーStudents tend to form a group with their close friends.
「生徒たちは仲の良い友達と固まる傾向にある」
to form a group with ... で「…と固まる」
ーPeople from the same country tend to hang out together.
「同じ国の人同士で固まる傾向にある」
to hang out together で「固まる」を表現することもできます。
