Usually people are afraid to be bitten whenever they see a do. However if the dog is trained not to eat humans you can say that it is harmless. For example: "Don't worry it will not bite you it is harmless." If it is friendly it also means that it like to play with humans without biting them.

To say that your dog is "harmless" is to say that it won't cause anybody any harm, it won't bite. "Friendly" is correct for the past, present and future tense. People in the UK will usually say, "does your dog bite?", or "don't worry, he doesn't bite," instead of using the "friendly".

We use the phrase "A big softy" to describe dogs who have a calm nature and who are non-threatening and playful towards humans. Temperament is a word that describes a dogs/persons nature especially when linked to behaviour, for example 'He has an artistic temperament' The word can be used to describe positive or negative characteristics. Dogs can be described as having a good/great/friendly/bad/aggressive temperament.

Saying your dog is a good boy or girl, will let people know, in an informal way, that they are happy, friendly and alright to be petted. It is also alright to simply say that your dog is friendly.

My dog is really friendly. He won't bite!- This is a common way of expressing that a dog is friendly i.e. not harmful. We often say, 'He won't bite!' which sounds a bit strange but we actually mean it. He won't bite= he is friendly. My dog is quite socialised- 'socialised' is quite a formal way of saying he is 'used to humans'. It means that an animal has been brought up around humans and is therefore friendly and harmless to humans
