The fact that the new semester begins on Thursday seems a little weird.
new semester は新学期と言う意味として使います。アメリカでは、州によって、年間の学期の分け方によって、quarter制の所もありますが、秋学期、春学期に分かれているセメスター制が多いです。
a little weird はちょっとおかしいんじゃないと言う意味です。strangeとほぼ同じ意味ですが、“変な感じ”という意味で良く使います。

「週の始まりじゃなくて、木曜から新学期が始まるのってすごくおかしな感じがする」
it seems really strange ... で「すごく奇妙に感じる」
