If you have left something or don't have it then you can say you 'forgot' it
If someone gives it to someone to give back to you then they are said to 'hand it in'
何かをどこかに置き忘れたなら、これは 'forgot' で表すことができます。

落とし物を届け出ることは 'hand something in' で表すことができます。

"I left my room key..." The past tense of "to leave something". I means you have forgotten something, eg, "I left my bag on the train".

"Handed in" is a phrasal verb, meaning to give something to a responsible person or person in authority, eg, "If you found a wallet on the street, would you hand it in to the police?".
"I left my room key..."

例えば:

例:
"If you found a wallet on the street, would you hand it in to the police?"(もしあなたが道で財布を拾ったら、警察に届けますか)
