"保護する・守る"の意訳だと「to protect」で"世話をする・看護する"の意訳だと「to care for」になります。
例
・I'd like to do something to protect animals（動物たちを保護するために何かしたいです）
・I want you to care for my cat while I am gone（私がいない間にネコの世話をお願いします）
「保護する」は、
"shelter" / "protect"
犬や猫を保護するという場合に、「（危険な状態から）救う・救助する」 という意味の
"rescue" / "save"
などの表現も使うことが出来ます。
"I'd like to shelter the poor animals."
「かわいそうな動物を保護したい。」
"I have rescued and adopted dogs and cats from the animal shelter."
「保健所から犬と猫を救助して飼っています。」
