It rather depends on the method of study you have chosen to learn a new language. Typicalluy, a language school would introduce students to a textbook or course book which the class may follow as a basis for study. However if you are learning independently, you may purchase a 'teach yourself' languiage book which will take you systematically through a series of exercises and input material upon which you may test yourself.
When trying to learn a different language you might need to use a book that has learning materials in to help you these can be called 'language textbooks' or 'language studybooks'
