Looking from the left, this is ...（左から見て、これが…）
Starting from the left, this is...（左からはじめて、これが…）
のような言い方ができると思います。
例：
Looking from the left side of the picture, this is my uncle Bob, my cousin George, and my other uncle Jack.
「写真の左側から見て、これがボブおじさん、いとこのジョージ、そしてこれがもう一人のおじさんジャックだよ。」

説明する は、explain もありますが、explain は、何かの理由などを説明する という意味合いで、describe は、もの や形などの 詳細を(詳しく)説明する という意味になり、こちらの文面ではdescribe になります^ ^
