怨恨を辞書で調べたら、grudgeという単語が出てきますが、こういう場合で下記のような訳し方になりますね。
That murder was motivated by hatred
その殺人は怨恨が動機だった
例えば、

電車走行中に殺人未遂事件が発生しました。怨恨による犯罪か、無差別殺人か、いずにれしても、恐ろしいです。
男が数人の乗客を刃物で刺した事件の話なら、A man attempted to murder several people on the train.にした方が、複数人を殺そうとした、という意味を伝えます。
