として、『何が起きたのか聞いてもいいかな？話したくなければ大丈夫だよ。』とするのはいかがでしょうか。what happened として、少し遠回しな表現にしてみました。
Would it be okay if I とすることでも、相手に無理強いをせず、相手の許可を得た上で自分の行動を進めるニュアンスが伝わると思います。
