What are you doing for Christmas (this year)? 「クリスマス何するの？」会話であれば 'this year' はなくても伝わりますね。
会話の場面では現在進行形を結構良く使います。
この場合 'are you going to do' と同じ意味ですが、「近い未来何をするつもりなのか」
と言いたいときに 'what are you doing' は使えます。
