直訳すると「あなたは何年生にいるのですか？」になります。
grade は「学年」のような意味です。
この質問の答え方は国によって学年の数え方が違う場合がありますので
気を付けましょう。

アメリカの場合ですが、8年生とは中学2年生を指します。7年生は中学1年生です。
州や学区によって少し変わるかもしれませんが、アメリカの場合、
小学校6年間、中学校２年間、高校４年間 または
小学校5年間、中学校３年間、高校４年間のパターンが多いです。
そのため、「高校１年生」と言っても学校によって年齢が変わってしまいます。
ですので、「中学〇年生」「高校〇年生」という表現ではなく、
6年生以降は７，８，９，１０，１１，１２年生と言います。

In Ireland, our education system differs from others. We don't usually say high school, we say secondary school. Before this, we go to primary school. We enter secondary school around the age of 12 and it last 5 or 6 years, depending on if you decide to do the optional extra year. We don't have Junior high school. We say we are in 1st year up to 6th year which is the final year before you enter university.
The first sentence is a general question you would ask someone in Ireland who seems like they are a teenager. If they are not in secondary school, they will tell you what "class" they are in if they are still in primary school.
The second sentence is a general question that you would ask any child in the USA or Canada. The word "grade" doesn't differ as it does in Ireland depending if you are in primary or secondary school.
The third sentence is another general question that you can ask anybody in any country if you are not familiar with the education system. By asking this way, you can convert in your head what grade, year or class the person would be in if he or she were from your country
