アメリカ英語では、「[学年](https://eikaiwa.dmm.com/uknow/questions/42350/)」＝「grade」ですが、イギリス英語では「year」という言い方が使われています。
例えば：

In the UK, we have a system of changing class every year and so the first year at school would be called 'Year one,' the second 'Year two' and so on. In the US, they call the different years 'Grades.'
"Hey Simon, you're from London aren't you?"
"Yes, I just came started here in California school last week."
"Which grade are you in?"
"Do you mean which year? I'm in year 8."
"Year 8 in the UK is called 7th grade in the US."
"Oh, thanks for telling me - I didn't know that!"
UKでは、クラス変更は毎年あります。一年生はYear oneと呼ばれ、二年生はYear 2と呼ばれていきます。USではGradeが使われます。

何年生ですか？
シンプルに「今、何年生ですか？」を聞くことができる英語フレーズです。
grade は「学年」などを意味する英語表現です。
例：
What grade are you in?
今、何年生ですか？

If you wanted to ask someone who you believe is in high school what grade they are in, you could ask them any of the following questions to get an answer: "What grade are you currently in?", "What school grade are you in?" or "What school year are you in?".
たぶん高校生の子に「何年生？」と聞きたいなら、次のように言えます。

In Ireland, our education system differs from others. We don't usually say high school, we say secondary school. Before this, we go to primary school. We enter secondary school around the age of 12 and it last 5 or 6 years, depending on if you decide to do the optional extra year. We don't have Junior high school. We say we are in 1st year up to 6th year which is the final year before you enter university.
The first sentence is a general question you would ask someone in Ireland who seems like they are a teenager. If they are not in secondary school, they will tell you what "class" they are in if they are still in primary school.
The second sentence is a general question that you would ask any child in the USA or Canada. The word "grade" doesn't differ as it does in Ireland depending if you are in primary or secondary school.
The third sentence is another general question that you can ask anybody in any country if you are not familiar with the education system. By asking this way, you can convert in your head what grade, year or class the person would be in if he or she were from your country
What grade are you in? で「今、何年生ですか？」と英語で表現することができます。
grade で「学年」を表すことができます。
たとえば sixth grade と言えば「6年生」になります。
