Looks are deceiving is used to say that something can be very different from how it seems or appears to be. For example in this case the person is kind and gentle in the public but is bad tempered in real life.

  • His private persona is quite different to his public one

  • He's a bad-tempered sod but he never lets his guard down in public

    play icon

Sod = (SLANG) The meaning 'sodomite' is a little old fashioned. More typically it's used as a softer form of 'fool', 'idiot', or 'bastard'. "He's a daft old sod, but you've got to love him." To let one's guard down = If you are defending yourself either physically or verbally, then you are 'keeping up your guard.' Figuratively, To 'let one's guard down' means. to stop guarding oneself against trouble; to relax one's vigilance. He never lets his guard down because he trusts no one.
Sod

"He's a daft old sod, but you've got to love him."

To let one's guard down

  • a wolf in sheep's clothing / a poser

  • He seems all nice and gentle, but don't be fooled-- he's actually a wolf in sheep's clothing.

    play icon

  • He keeps beefing himself up, but he's only a poser-- no one even knows who he is.

    play icon

A wolf in sheep's clothing is a phrase used to describe someone who, like a sheep, appears to be gentle, and puts on an act of kindness, when they are really ferocious and predatory like a wolf. A poser is someone who puts on act so as to give the impression that he/she is something that they are not-- they usually put on an act to appear grander or more important than they are.

  • Although he is kind in public in private he is polar opposite.

  • The way he acts in public is totally different compared to the way he acts in private.

    play icon

The two sentences you see provided above are great ways to express to your listener that a certain person acts one way while in public but acts another way in private. In the first sentence you will notice the term polar opposite. This means one thing is completely different from another thing. This is a term that is appropriate for informal settings.

  • Looks can be deceiving

Appearances can be deceptive badically means not everything is as good as it looks and it can be different to what it looks like Another simple way of saying this is 'All is not as it seems' this also means things can look different to what they actually are Looks can be deceiving means something looks better than it actually is

All is not as it seems"というフレーズがあります。

  • Shady

Calling someone "two faced" says that they act differently than they would like people to believe. One face is the one that they want people to believe, the other is their real face. "Duplicitous" is another way of saying someone is not to be trusted. Someone who is duplicitous shows one face to people and then will often use that confidence against them at a later time. "Shady" is a more casual or informal way of expressing this same idea. It implies someone lies, is not to be trusted or who does not do what they promise to do.
