「perform」は本番のテストや上演の際に「[うまくいく](https://eikaiwa.dmm.com/uknow/questions/43892/)」ことを表すもので、それを更に一般化して広範囲の物事を表したい時（普段からの勉強を指したい時）は「do」を使うと適当な表現になるかと思います。
