When counting something and you notice there is one missing or lacking, you can say: We are one ball short. 'One ... short' To be short of something means to lack something. We are two dresses short of the order. There is one ball missing. Missing - This means that it is not present. It cannot be seen or found. The note is missing. We are short of one ball. This is similar to the first phrase only the words are rearranged. We are short of coffee today. I hope that helps!
We are one ball short. one ... short - be short We are two dresses short of the order. There is one ball missing. missing - なくなっていることを意味します。 例 The note is missing. We are short of one ball. We are short of coffee today.

Well, sometimes we may need ten balls to play a certain game. Then we discover that one ball is missing. You may exclaim: "We're one ball short!" If you suspect someone has taken it, you may even go so far as to ask: "Who stole my b all?" Or, through your hands in the air in despair and exclaim: "We're missing a ball"

Instead of saying "1 ball short." you say "1 ball is short." Instead of saying "1 ball missing" you say "1 ball is missing.
1 ball shortという代わりに 1 ball is short. 1 ball missingという代わりに 1 ball is missing.

"After the count, we found there is a ball missing." =This sentence is simple but at the same time indicating that you found out about a missing ball after conducting a count. "After counting the balls we found there is a ball missing." =This sentence is similar to the one above, but this time you get to emphasis 'after counting' to show when you discovered what has happened.
After the count, we found there is a ball missing. After counting the balls we found there is a ball missing.

When we say that we are, "short," on something it is another way of saying that, "we are missing something," which in this context means that we are missing or short one of the balls.
