  • flirtmance / cuddle buddies

  • QP/ queerplatonic / zucchini / soulmate / best friend / you have a special bond

  • friends with benefits

We have a lot of terms for this depending on how close you are in the relationship. For a relationship that is purely platonic, but you are really close to this person and you feel a special bond, you can say one of the following usually "QP/ queerplatonic / zucchini / soulmate / best friend / you have a special bond." For a relationship that is a friendship, but sometimes you get flirty or sometimes you may cuddle, you can use any of the words I already stated, or you can specifically say that you are " in a flirtmance / cuddle buddies." It depends on the situation. For a relationship that is friendly but you are sexual or intimate with this person, you would call it "friends with benefits."
QP/ queerplatonic / zucchini / soulmate / best friend / you have a special bond." 友人だがふざけていちゃつく仲は " in a flirtmance / cuddle buddies."

  • They have a bit of a thing going

  • They're good friends who mess about a bit

  • They're friends on reduced benefits

Someone who is a friend but not exactly a lover but with some mutually romantic intentions is a difficult category to name! It is not a 'full on' relationship but it has crossed the 'friend' boundary. People may just say that "They have a bit of a thing going," or that they "..mess about a bit." "To have a thing" = to have a liaison, an amour, a flirtation, even an affair or a relationship. It's the same as "there's something going on between them." "To mess about/around" =to engage in sexual activity; "fool around". Though the term is vague, it usually implies something more than kissing. "We were messing around in his car when a security guard knocked on the window." A 'friend with benefits' is a friend you have sex with but with no commitments - so if you don't exactly have sex together, it seems the benefits are reduced?
They have a bit of a thing going, ..mess about a bit. 「here's something going on between them.(何かが起こっている)」と言うことと同様です。 We were messing around in his car when a security guard knocked on the window.

*fling-相手と付き合っていないけれど、付き合っているような特典があること 【例文】 "It was just a fling with David.I don't expect it to go into a relationship."(デイビッドとは遊んでいるだけで、付き合うことは期待していないの) *Friends with benefit-しばしばカジュアルな性的関係にある友人 【例文】 "We are not dating we are just friends with benefits."(私たちは付き合っているわけではなく、性的関係にある友人同士です)

  • Friends with benefits

  • close friends

If the relationship is platonic, meaning it is not romance based, the adjective close or best friends. For others with a romantic aspect that isnt yet defined, friends with benefits is widely understood.

  • Friends with benefits

Native speakers call this sort of relationship “Friends with benefits”. There are lots of other ways to say it, but this one is the most accurate and most commonly used. Here is an example on how to use this in a conversation: A: Are you guys dating? Is it getting serious? B: Not really, we're just friends with benefits.
A: Are you guys dating? Is it getting serious? B: Not really, we're just friends with benefits.

  • Friends with benefits

  • People who are messing about

"Friends with benefits" is a phrase used to describe people who agree that their friendship is not strictly platonic and most likely they have a sexual attraction towards each other. As a result, both people agree that they are in an interesting position as they are somewhere between friends and lovers.
