素材って英語でなんて言うの？

material 材料（布以外のものでも使える表現です。金属、木材など）
fabric 生地

通常の会話では、material や fabricという言葉を使うよりも
What's your coat made out of? （あなたのコートは何でできているの？）
と聞くほうが自然です。

このコートは何でできていますか？

この言い方で素材について答えを得られると思います。
布＝fabric, materialなので、より丁寧にきくならば：
What material/ fabric does this coat use?
このコートはどんな布を使用していますか？

What fabric/ material is this?
この布はなんですか？

What material/fabric is this coat made of?
このコートはどのような布で作られていますか？

となります。

「素材」は英語で「material」と言います。生地の場合には「fabric」という言い方も使えます。

What material is that coat made of? / What fabric is that coat made of?
(そのコートはなんの素材でできているのですか？)

What material should I use?
（何の素材を使えばいい？）

This fabric is cool and light.
（この素材は軽くて涼しいです。）

This fabric is so soft!
（この素材はとても柔らかいです！）

素材は英語materialと言います。

例）
