A domestic animal, meaning an animal that is kept in your home, that is tame and loved by you, is known as your 'pet'. Tame is defined as an animal that is domesticated and not frightened of people. Domesticated is defined in a similar way. Farm animals can also be described as domesticated, as they are kept by humans.
We also use the word pet to describe the act of using your hand to softly touch a domesticated animal, usually by stroking it's fur. For example:

The first is the most common usage. There was a strange story in the UK recently about a Florida student who had to flush her"emotional support hamster" down the toilet when an airline wouldn't let it on her plane! I can only assume "emotional support creatures"are treated worse than pets!
