Detective is the most common term to hear for someone who is like Sherlock Holmes. But you might also hear "Private eye" or "Sleuth."
The difference between Private eye and Sleuth is that a Private eye tends to be someone who is paid by an individual to find information for them. While, a sleuth tends to be someone who is just having fun following clues.
Here are a few examples of these words.
