These days in the UK, due to equality of the sexes, it is not politically correct (according to many people) to say that a woman who is a character in a film or play is 'an actress'. The norm now is to call both male and female participants 'actors'. Obviously this is clearly a step backwards in terms of accuracy and ease of distinguishing between a male and a female professional in this field!

"Thespian" is a very formal and elegant way to say actor/actress. It is not frequently used in spoken conversation.
Sometimes people will refer to an actor who performs in a play as a "player".
